John C. Stennis Strike Group Visits Malaysia
PORT KLANG, Malaysia - Four ships from the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSCSG) arrived in Port Klang, Malaysia, for a port visit Sept. 4.
Sailors from aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), guided missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), and guided missile destroyers USS Dewey (DDG 105) and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) will have the opportunity to experience local sights and culture, volunteer for community service projects, and host tours for national dignitaries and guests.
“I am confident the time we spend in Malaysia will allow Sailors to enjoy liberty while also making a positive, lasting impression on the local population,” said Stennis’ Commanding Officer Capt. Ronald Reis.
Sailors will also volunteer their time at several local community service projects, including work in two children’s homes and a senior citizen’s home.
“Our Sailors are volunteering at various community service projects during this port visit,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Carmel Arnold, a volunteer coordinator aboard Stennis. “These projects serve as a valuable tool for our Sailors to give back to the communities that we visit. The work we do here is impacting peoples lives in a positive way and that is very important to us.”
“We encourage our Sailors to enjoy their liberty and take advantage of the chance to relax,” said Reis. “Some Sailors choose to spend that time making a difference in local communities, and the work they do as ambassadors of the United States is invaluable.”
The deployment of JCSCSG exemplifies the Navy’s dedication to building partnerships across the globe, and this visit affords members of the strike group an opportunity to build and strengthen relationships between the Malaysian and U.S. militaries.
“The Navy we serve in today is an all volunteer force representing the best and brightest young men and women in the United States,” said Faller. “The efforts of our Sailors while on deployment and during this port visit exemplifies a global force for good with Sailors engaged in community serve projects, enjoying local culture and professional military-to-military exchange.”
JCSCSG is comprised of Stennis and embarked Carrier Air Wing 9, Mobile Bay (CG 53), and Destroyer Squadron 21; Dewey; Wayne E. Meyer; and guided-missile destroyers USS Kidd (DDG 100) and USS Pinckney (DDG 91).
John C. Stennis departed homeport in Bremerton, Wash. July 25 for deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet in support of theater security cooperation engagement and the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. John C. Stennis last deployed to the western Pacific Ocean in 2007.
