Matthews joined the Navy in 1999 to continue a four—generation family tradition of service in the Navy. During his service, he twice deployed to the Middle East on board the USS Truman and served shore duty at Naval Air Station Patuxent River. While on leave visiting family in Wisconsin in 2008, Matthews was involved in a car accident, sustaining a spinal cord injury, a broken neck and broken arm which resulted in him becoming a C—6 incomplete quadriplegic. He was medically separated in 2011 and is in transition back home in Wisconsin. He enjoys participating in adaptive athletics to stay healthy and keep active. His favorite sports are cycling and kayaking.
