In 2006, Valbrun joined the Navy to travel the world and earn money for college. He deployed on the USS Truman in 2007 to the Middle East. In 2009 while on liberty in Norfolk, Valbrun was shot in the neck and chest resulting in nerve damage and paralysis in his left arm and damage to his left lung. Valbrun was medically retired in 2012 and looks forward to going to school and getting more involved in adaptive athletics to support his recovery.
