EVERETT, Wash. - The guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86) returned to Naval Station Everett from a scheduled six-month deployment with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region and the Arabian Gulf.
Shoup is part of Nimitz Strike Group and operates under U.S. 3rd Fleet, which leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. U.S. 3rd Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
The Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35 pilots logged over 700 hours in support of Operation Inherent Resolve augmented Shoup’s 300 Sailor crew.
“There are no words to express how proud I am of this crew,” said Cmdr. Ted Wiederholt, commanding officer of Shoup. “A lot was asked of Shoup while on deployment. Her Sailors answered the call ensuring Shoup executed every mission assigned. I cannot think of any other crew to deploy into harm’s way with!”
Shoup participated in multi-national exercises Malabar and Intrepid Sentinel. These two exercises enhanced warfighting readiness, interoperability, and maritime coordination between allies and partners of Japan, India, France and the United Kingdom.
In the course of the deployment, the crew enjoyed port visits to Chennai, India; Manama, Bahrain; Oman, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Shoup’s Sailors manned the rails in their service dress blues as they approached the pier and anxiously awaited reunions with their families. Sailors disembarked the ship onto the pier and were greeted with hugs and kisses from loved ones.
“Huge thanks to my wife,” said Electronics Technician First Class Tyler Hinrichs from Boulder, CO. “Her ability to manage a move from Utah while six months pregnant, with a three year old toddler, an energetic dog, and taking care of the home front while I was gone will never cease to amaze me. Without her none of what I do would be possible!”
Shoup was named after the 22nd Commandant of the Marine Corps and Medal of Honor recipient General David Monroe Shoup. Commissioned in 2002, USS Shoup is part of Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and is assigned to Destroyer Squadron 9 (DESRON 9) and U.S. 3rd Fleet.
