09 February 2017

From U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs

The aircraft carrier arrived at Naval Base Guam, Feb. 10, for its first port visit of an ongoing deployment to the Western Pacific.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) arrived in Guam, Feb. 10, for the aircraft carrier's first port visit of an ongoing deployment to the Western Pacific.

While there, Sailors will enjoy some time off and have an opportunity to participate in several projects and activities as part of the ship’s community outreach program.

Since beginning their deployment in early January, the approximately 7,500 Sailors of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group have been conducting training and maritime security operations.

Deployed with Carl Vinson are Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, and embarked Destroyer Squadron (CDS) 1, the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), and guided-missile destroyers USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108).

Wayne E. Meyer also recently visited Guam.

Throughout the deployment in the Indo-Asia-Pacific, the strike group will remain focused on maritime security and theater security cooperation efforts, to include conducting bilateral exercises in areas such as anti-submarine warfare, maneuvering, gunnery, and visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) and subject matter expert exchanges.

While deployed the strike group will remain under U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control, including beyond the international dateline which previously divided operational areas of responsibility for 3rd and 7th Fleets. This U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets.
