U.S. Sailors reach out to local community in South Korea

08 December 2011

From Chief Information Systems Technician David Kelly

7th Fleet commander, ship's crew are taking part in the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition.

MASAN, Republic of Korea - Sailors assigned to Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC) volunteered for a community service event in Masan, Republic of Korea in the spirit of holiday giving, Dec. 5.

There were 26 Sailors teamed up with the South Korean Community Chest Organization to deliver home-heating, charcoal briquettes to those less fortunate.

"It is going to be a very cold winter and some people cannot afford to heat their homes this long. Those who cannot afford to heat their homes with gas or diesel still use charcoal briquettes," said Mr. Kyong H. Pak, community relations specialist for CFAC.

The Masan district office screened individuals and families to provide the names of those most in need. CFAC delivered 500 briquettes for the day. Last year 33,000 were delivered to less fortunate families throughout the district by the project from Oct.- Feb.

"It's really getting cold outside and I'm glad that we can help even in this small way," said Information Systems Technician Second Class Jose Jones.

"It's a great feeling; it's like giving turkeys for Thanksgiving," he said.

CFAC serves as the only U.S. Naval base in the Republic of Korea and is located on the southwest tip of the peninsula.
