Sailors spent a day playing with the children, age seven to 18, and learning about programs offered at the home.

PATTAYA, Thailand - Sailors from USS Lassen (DDG 82) participated in a community service project at the Banglamung Home for Boys in Pattaya Nov. 20.

Set up through The Navy League and the Boys Home superintendent Chamaiporn Vithayaperl, Sailors spent the day playing with the children and learning about programs offered at the orphanage.

The Boys Home houses and educates approximately 60 boys ranging in age from seven to 18 years old. Delighted to receive guests, the children introduced themselves to Lassen Sailors and immediately began teaching them several games they enjoy playing.

"These kids are great and I am glad to help out with the program," said Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Electrical) 1st Class Farah Bautista. "I come from a similar background and know how important this is to them."

Many of the games, geared to enhance listening and math skills, proved a fun challenge for children and Sailors alike. The challenge continued as a group of Sailors squared off with some of the older boys in a soccer match.

"We are having a lot of fun together," said Ens. Mike Ramsey. "But it is clear we are outmatched on the soccer field."

Following their recreation, Sailors and children relaxed by sharing music and enjoying fresh lemonade and snacks. The event concluded with a group photo and presentation of Lassen ball caps to express appreciation to the Boys Home for their hospitality.

Lassen is assigned to Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (DESRON 15) and is currently assisting in disaster relief efforts in Thailand.
