Boxer Amphibious Ready Group Visits Thailand

USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Green Bay (LPD 20), and USS Comstock (LSD 45) arrived in Phuket Aug. 22.

PHUKET, Thailand - The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (BOXARG) and embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (13MEU) arrived in Phuket, Thailand, Aug. 22, for a port visit during their 2011 deployment.

The ready group consists of three ships – amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) and amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45).

Phuket marks the first port visit for BOXARG since departing the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility Aug. 16, and is the second port of call where all three ships have been together since deploying Feb. 22.

“Thailand is the most anticipated country for our Sailors and Marines to visit so far during this deployment,” said Commander, Amphibious Squadron ONE, Capt. Curtis Shaub. “Our Sailors and Marines always enjoy opportunities to visit new and exciting cities around the world. Phuket offers our Sailors and Marines a fantastic opportunity to experience the culture and beauty of this magnificent country.”

While in Phuket, servicemembers from BOXARG and 13th MEU will devote some of their off-duty time to participate in community service projects at Muang Phuket School, Hope of Phuket International Church, Home and Life Foundation Phang Nga Orphanage as well as enjoy multiple leisure and sightseeing tours sponsored by the ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation department.

“We thank the Kingdom of Thailand and the Thai people for their hospitality and friendship,” said Shaub. “Thailand remains a good friend and partner of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Working together with partner nations is critical to ensuring peace and stability in the region.”

The BOXARG and 13th MEU are currently operating within the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations and is homeported in San Diego, California.
