PEARL HARBOR (NNS) - Naval Submarine Support Command (NSSC) Pearl Harbor has been selected and on Dec. 2 announced as the recipient of the 2010 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility in the at-large category.
"This award is testament to the flexibility of the command in both supporting the submarines operating in Hawaii and supporting our Sailors," said Capt. William Stevenson, commanding officer of Naval Submarine Support Command Pearl Harbor.
As a recipient of the 2010 Sloan Award, NSSC ranks in the top 20% of employers nationally in terms of its programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace.
"As part of the award process we had to provide information on the command's support to our people," said Stevenson. "What makes this award unique is that after we provided input, an anonymous survey was done to see whether the command actually does what it says it does. We were then compared to other commands and businesses across the country."
Sloan Award honorees become part of a national flexibility leadership network representing employers of all sizes and from all sectors to share best practices, exchange ideas and serve as models for other employers and community leaders. Exclusive learning opportunities will be shared with this network throughout the year.
NSSC will be highlighted in the upcoming "Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work," a national publication that compiles innovations and promising practices from all Sloan Award recipients.
The Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility are part of When Work Works, a national project on workplace flexibility and workplace effectiveness from Families and Work Institute in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for a Competitive Workforce and the Twiga Foundation.
