Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander U.S. Pacific Fleet, traveled to the Kingdom of Thailand, May 1-2, 2023 to affirm strength of the U.S.-Thailand Alliance.

Paparo met with senior Thailand officials to discuss the importance of maritime security and interoperability between naval forces in the Indo-Pacific for regional peace, security, and stability.

The meetings included:

  • Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Defence, Gen. Sanitchanog Sangkachantra
  • Chief of Defence Forces, Royal Thai Armed Forces, Gen. Chalermphon Srisawasdi
  • Assistant Commander-in-Chief, Royal Thai Navy, Adm. Suwin Jangyodsuk
  • Chief of Staff, Royal Thai Navy, Adm. Chonlathis Navanughraha
  • Commander-in-Chief, Royal Thai Fleet, Adm. Adoong Pan-iam

The leaders discussed the friendship and close cooperation of the two navies and the endurance of the U.S.-Thai Alliance, now marking 190 years.

The two navies regularly participate in bilateral and multilateral exercises, including Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) and Cobra Gold. Thailand recently hosted USS Charleston (LCS 18), USS Makin Island (LHD 8) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) for port visits.

Paparo extended condolence for the loss of lives aboard HTMS Sukhothai. He offered assistance in the recovery efforts.

During the visit, Suwin hosted Paparo, on behalf of Adm. Cherngchai Chomcherngpat, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, for the Inspection of the Guard of Honor at the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters.
