USS Chafee participates in multilateral MIO exercise

The guided-missile destroyer will join ships from the Republic of Korea Navy and Royal Australian Navy for a maritime interdiction operations (MIO) exercise off the Republic of Korea coast, Nov. 6-7.

WATERS TO THE EAST OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA - USS Chafee (DDG 90) will join ships from the Republic of Korea Navy and the Royal Australian Navy during a multilateral maritime interdiction operations (MIO) exercise in waters off the coast of the Republic of Korea, Nov. 6-7.

This exercise is designed to improve interoperability between partner nations and focus on interdicting security threats in the maritime environment that impact regional security and stability. Completion of periodic interdiction training exercises continues to improve readiness, capabilities and partnerships throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

Personnel from partner nations in Europe, North America and Asia are also taking part in this exercise as observers.

The U.S. Navy, Republic of Korea Navy and the Royal Australia Navy regularly participate in maritime training exercises throughout the 7th Fleet area of operations in an effort to maintain security and stability throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific.
