YOKOSUKA, Japan - Commander, Submarine Group 7 hosted bilateral talks with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) Submarine Force May 10-12 at Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
The 45th Submarine Warfare Committee Meeting (SWCM) brought together representatives from the ROK and U.S. submarine forces. Rear Adm. Richard A. Correll, Commander, Submarine Group 7, met with Rear Adm. Park No-Cheon, Commander, ROK Submarine Force to discuss combined exercises, theater anti-submarine warfare operations, and other submarine warfare areas.
The underlying theme of the talks was to expand the already strong alliance between the U.S. and ROK navies.
“Discussions like this provide an excellent opportunity to further integrate with one of our strongest allies,” said Correll. “It also serves to bolster our already strong alliance and commitment to peace and security in the region.”
Established in 1994 during the birth of the ROKN submarine fleet, SWCM has evolved into discussions between U.S. and ROK submarine forces focused on submarine tactics, force integration and future submarine developments.
“This year’s meeting was more meaningful than ever,” said Park. “The hospitality and professionalism of Rear Adm. Correll and his team reaffirmed our ever increasing relationship and enhanced interoperability among our submarine forces.” Park is the second commander of the ROKN Submarine Force Command, established in February 2015.
