Communication Suite Proves Energy Efficient in Foal Eagle

A new communication suite used by the staff of Commander, Task Force 75 during exercise Foal Eagle 2016 reduced fuel consumption by 30 percent from its predecessor.

BUSAN, Republic of Korea - A new communication suite used during exercise Foal Eagle 2016 reduced fuel consumption by 30 percent from its predecessor.

Foal Eagle 2016 was the first deployment in 7th Fleet for the Expeditionary Combat Command Enterprise Tactical Command Control (NETC2) V2, which enabled U.S. 7th Fleet’s Expeditionary Forces to command and control Navy Expeditionary Combat Forces participating in the exercise.

The NETC2V2 suite is the complete package of communications equipment, operations center and support gear, that can be used from remote locations around the globe.

The uniqueness of the NETC2V2 from its predecessors is the energy conservation measures that were built into its design. Advanced Medium Mobile Power Systems (AMMPS), Improved Environmental Control Units (IECUs), LED lighting, and tent liners combine to reduce energy usage in the Maritime Operations Center.

“By using this efficient and effective power generation, we were able to save energy and also generate the power needed to operate our command and control system.” said Capt. Erich Diehl, commander of Task Force 75.

In fact the improved design coupled with more efficient operating procedures can reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent.

The success of the NETC2V2 suite at Foal Eagle 2016 was a milestone for the Navy’s yearlong Great Green Fleet initiative to highlight efforts to transform its energy use to increase operational capability.

Increased energy efficiency is critical to increases operational reach, equipment availability and reduce vulnerability to resource constraints — thus the greater potential for mission success.
