Theodore Roosevelt to Complete World Deployment

The aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt (CVN 71) is scheduled to arrive at her new San Diego homeport Nov. 23 following an eight month-plus deployment to the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.

SAN DIEGO - USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) is scheduled to arrive at her new homeport of Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, California, with embarked Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2, following a scheduled eight and a half-month deployment to the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operation, Nov. 23.

The aircraft carrier's arrival in San Diego is part of the three-carrier shift involving USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS George Washington (CVN 73).

The Theodore Roosevelt CSG consists of Theodore Roosevelt, CVW 1, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) and the guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 2, USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81).

CVW 1 consists of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11 "Red Rippers," VFA-136 "Knighthawks," and VFA-211 "Checkmates" from NAS Oceana; Marine Corps Strike Fighter Squadron (VMFA) 251 "Thunderbolts" from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina; Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 137 "Rooks" from NAS Whidbey Island, Washington; Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125 "Tigertails" and Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 "Rawhides" from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia; Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46 "Grandmasters" from Naval Station Mayport, Florida; and Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron (HS) 11 "Dragonslayers" from Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.

During the course of Theodore Roosevelt's deployment, CVW 1 successfully executed 1,812 combat sorties encompassing 10,618 combat flight hours over Iraq and Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In addition, aircrew successfully employed 1,085 precision guided munitions, destroying enemy targets and fighting positions in direct defense of friendly forces and enabling reclamation of key territory from ISIL.

Working with allied and partner maritime forces, Theodore Roosevelt CSG units focused heavily on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts which helped establish conditions for regional stability. Units conducted exercises with coalition countries and other nations, including Britain, France, India and Japan. The guided-missile destroyers participated in three exercises involving the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Forrest Sherman and Winston S. Churchill returned to their homeport of Naval Station Norfolk Nov. 7 and Farragut returned to her homeport of Naval Station Mayport Nov 7.

Normandy continues her transit through the 3rd and 4th Fleet areas of operation and will return to her homeport of Naval Station Norfolk in December.
