YOKOSUKA, Japan - The Los Angeles class, fast attack submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka March 8 for a visit as part of its deployment to the Western Pacific.
With a crew of approximately 135, Bremerton conducts a multitude of missions and showcases the latest capabilities of the U.S. submarine fleet.
"The officers and crew of Bremerton look forward to building camaraderie with our Japanese hosts and enjoying some rest and relaxation in Yokosuka," said Cmdr. Caleb Kerr, Bremerton's commanding officer.
"Routine port visits by United States submarines help to strengthen the defense partnership that exists between the U.S. and Japan. These port visits also permit navy leaders to interact with local leaders and officials, providing opportunities for the crews of Navy ships to participate in friendship and goodwill activities with our host nation," said Kerr.
Bremerton is a frontline attack submarine built for stealth, endurance and agility. She is equipped with the most advanced sonar and weapons delivery system. In support of her mission, she carriers up to 90 days of food while producing her own oxygen and water from the surrounding ocean.
"Our Sailors are giving their best efforts every day, keeping Bremerton in a high state of readiness," said Information Technician (Submarines) Master Chief Wade Tandberg, Bremerton's chief of the boat. "They have been looking forward to visiting Yokosuka and seeing some of the great attractions the area has to offer, and getting some much earned rest. Seeing Tokyo is high on many of our crew's must-see lists."
For many of the crew members, this is their first time visiting Japan.
"I am very excited to see Japan," said Logistics Specialist Seaman Daniel Walpole. "It is something that has been on my to-do list for quite some time now. I want to see Tokyo if possible, call my family and friends, and experience the culture."
Measuring more than 360 feet long and weighing more than 6927 tons when submerged, Bremerton is one of the most versatile submarines in the world. This submarine is capable of supporting a multitude of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, strike warfare and intelligence, and surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
Bremerton is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and is the second ship to bear the name.
