NAGOYA, Japan - The guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86) pulled into Nagoya, Japan on Nov. 4, where Sailors will have the opportunity to tour the unique area and interact with the local community.

The ship was met on the pier by the Japanese Self Defense Force band and Mr. Okouchi, chairman of the Maritime Self Defense Force Association met and greeted the crew with flowers.

“The strong relationship between our two nations has been the foundation that has led to security, stability and prosperity, not only for our nations, but the larger region,” said Cmdr. Joe Nadeau, commanding officer of USS Shoup and originally from San Diego, Calif., during an arrival conference held on the pier shortly after the ship moored.

The visit to Nagoya celebrates the long-standing relationship between the United States and Japan established by the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of that document.

“We are looking forward to enjoying time in the beautiful city of Nagoya and surrounding areas: seeing the sights, enjoying the local food and meeting new friends,” added Nadeau, whose first duty station as an ensign was Japan.

Shoup is homeported in Everett, Wash. and is currently deployed to the 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
