Fleet Bandmaster
A native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Lt. Cmdr. Luslaida Barbosa enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1996 as a clarinet instrumentalist and served at U.S. 7th Fleet Band, Navy Band Southeast and Naval Forces Europe Band. Other duties included operations coordinator, ceremonial band conductor, unit leader and drum major, while also performing as lead vocalist and clarinet instrumentalist in support of European and African theaters of operation and the Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
Commissioned in May 2012, she was assigned to the Naval School of Music as training officer. In July 2014, she reported to the U.S. Navy Band where she served as the Concert/Ceremonial Band department head, security manager, legal officer, admin officer and contracting officer representative. In June 2017, she reported for duty as director, Navy Band Southeast.
Prior to her assignment as fleet bandmaster, U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, she received a Master of Music in wind band conducting at the University of North Texas as part of the Naval Postgraduate School Civilian Institutions Program. She is a graduate of the Navy’s basic, unit leader, and senior musician courses and also holds a Bachelor of Humanities from Thomas Edison State College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.
Her personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), as well as the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification.
